Hey Guys and Gals,

Recently my very first Subaru popped a head gasket.
I pulled the engine and started the tear down and cleaning inspection process.
Now I was going to fix her and keep driving until I hit 400k but I have 3 Subaru's right now and I would rather spend my time and money on other things.

Bad stuff:

Rust issues in the back were a work in progress and I've fiber-glassed and bondo'd some of it.
Its mostly fiberglass and bondo was only used to smooth the surface out.

Engine issues are as follows.
1. Chip in one of the cylinder edges. Chip is small and doesnt extend into the bore or the fire ring. I planned on doing nothing about it and driving the car.
2. Lifter noise on pass side. Hydraulic lifter tapped on occasion.
3. Two exhaust valve guides have dropped 4mm. One in each head.
4. Each head has some form of corrosion damage. Damage is adjacent to the water passages and not in the combustion area.
5. Its time for a new timing belt and the timing covers are damaged from warp-age and rubbing against the crank pulley.
6. I've pulled two pistons so far. Each one has some form of scratching on the upper skirt. Cylinders show no signs of scratching. Rings are intact and oil control ring was free of buildup. I planned on doing nothing about them and driving the car.
7. "B" piston cylinders have some shiny spots along the sides. "F##k you Fuji and your two piston sizes. Just use "A" next time." I planned on doing nothing about it and driving the car.
8. Ignition switch might be on its way out. I have a new one.(Its not the starter)

Pilot bearing is bad. I have a new one.
Radiator has Marine-Tex repair in core. It's held for 6 years. It ain't going no where. I planned on doing nothing about it and driving the car.

Good stuff:

Transmission shifted fine.
Tires were replaced last year.
WRX carpet
Extended shifter from Forester.
Rear drum brakes completely rebuilt this year. New everything back there. EVERYTHING.
KYB struts all the way around.
Supers cat delete pipe ---- yet no P0420 code???
Front speakers were replaced with Pioneers last year. Rears were thrown out.
New catback exhaust. Muffler is oem Subaru from an RS. Muffler was never used until I put it on.
It's an EJ22 non-interference.
Car currently has around 250k
Ball joints have been replaced.
Drivers front caliper replaced last year.
Front sway bar links replaced last year.
No accidents while I've owned it. No sign of any previous damage from before me.

The plan was to bring the heads to a machine shop have the corrosion welded up, get them decked and new valve guides pressed in.
Clean the pistons up, re-seal the motor and drive it.
But I'm like "meh". I have 3 Subaru's.

Engine is currently out of the car and disassembled. I've lapped the valves for one head and started cleaning up the parts for reassembly.

Its my belief before I purchased the car with 140k the timing belt was changed and either straight water or the wrong coolant used.
A year into owning it the heater core went and I replaced it. At that time the correct coolant was put in.

My price is $600.
Not $599 not $601... $600

Will need to be towed.

The tapping you hear initially is a hydraulic lifter. The motor does not have rod knock or audible piston slap.
