I have a 98 JDM STi that had a starting problem when I got it from Japan.
It takes approximately 10-15 cranks to start and oddly enough never floods.
This car has the v3+ silicone coils so it's not coil related.
When I first got it here is how it behaved:
Crank 10-15 times to start, if I shut it off and restart right away it starts normally 3-5 cranks.
I reset the ecu manually (by connecting the connectors) there was an O2 sensor CEL that was cleared, but never showed up when the car was running/driving.
I noticed that when I prime the fuel pump it sometimes helps reduce the number of cranks so I quickly went to change the fuel pump which didn't help my crank issue.
Since then I changed the fuel filter, cam, crank sensors with no luck.
Currently:
-priming the fuel pump still helps reduce the number of cranks.
-after the first start it no longer starts normally as it did before, I have to crank 10-15 times EVERY TIME !!!
I threw in half a can of seaform for 15L of gas with no changes really.
After talking to some people we are thinking that this could be evap system related (something could be fouling my o2 sensor eventhough I never had the CEL pop up) or leaking injectors ?
EDIT: I also should mention that when I first got the car I smelled fuel in the engine bay after
cranking, but after resetting the ECU I don't smell anything in the engine bay.
Thanks!
