I'm finally gonna buy a 2.5 RS. It's a 2005 sport package, the guy isn't asking much for it, it has 100k miles, head gaskets and timing belt were done in December (the maintenance was done properly). It has a few check engine codes but I'll let the garage deal with them as soon as I get the car, as I have negotiated the price to pay for the check engine code debugging. There's also a catalytic converter code but I'll just replace it with a second-hand one.
However, the thing that bothers me the most is the oil burning. The mechanic dude says it's a pretty normal consumption for a 100k miles motor but I'm still not sure about it. Basically, when I brought the car at the garage for the inspection, there was no oil visible on the stick. The last oil change was ~3.5k miles ago but the owner didn't add any (I do believe him).
The oil wasn't synthetic and the grade was 10W-30. I've been thinking that I could use some synthetic oil with a grade of 10W-40 to slow down the burning. Would that be a good plan or I'm just asking for trouble by buying this car?
Thanks guys.
Edit: I forgot to mention that I've been following the market for a solid year and this is one of the cleanest I found for the price. It has absolutely no rust which is a huge plus.
Edit2: I also forgot to mention that I test drove the car when the oil level was low and the engine wasn't hesitating at all. Of course I was well behaving, shifting at 2.5-3k RPM and no quick acceleration. I did reach 5th speed and it felt very much like my friend's RS that had a new motor. I would have never expected that the oil level was low.
