Possible spark knock? Ongoing for months

Alright guys.
We have a 2001 Impreza 2.2 super slow. - Auto :'(

She pings like crazy going up hill mainly around 1500-2500 rpm (shifts). Speeds are typically around 20-35 mph (cant really hear anything but wind and tires after that)
It is intermittent as far as the ticking/pinging. What I mean by that is there is no consistent sound. Could happen 10x in a row, have a break for a second, ping a few more times, another pause of nothing, then ping again.

I have had it to the dealer several times (no use -.- ) and they said check the timing belt tensioner... It was due for a new belt anyways, so I changed everything. All tensioners, pulleys, waterpump, thermo and the belt. Still there.

So I took what I knew about spark knock and what causes it... Pulled the injectors, checked all the screens, spray patterns, new fuel filters (in tank and canister) checked the knock sensor's resistence (.547 M-ohms... <700 K-ohms...all good there)

So here I sit... Noise has been there since I bough the car an entire year ago... And still can't figure it out...

My main though would lead to the valves being out of adjustment but I don't think that fits the noise...

Since I have not owned the car prior to the issue I really can't tell if it is sluggish or has a hesitation... It seems just as fast and as big of a turd as my old neon did, just a lot funner to drive

Anyone have any ideas?

~ EDIT:
I have seen a lot of people having issues with knock sensors without throwing a CEL... Is it worth spending the $70 for a new OEM one? I get parts stupid cheap, but the sensor is still pricey.

DOUBLE EDIT:

Forgot to mention... Car runs like **** after you start it... Like has trouble holding a few hundred RPM for a good 20 seconds (unless you just floor it after it starts doing it... goes away instantly then... odd)
Occasionally I think I feel the car hesitate when trying to shift, but it's always at weird times, like passing people doing 60-70 and it shifts, realized its almost redlined and then shifts back, all the while never seeming to engage. Not sure if I can count that as a symptom or not, but whatever. IT happens!
