How can I diagnose problems with a broken AC on my 2000 Subaru Impreza "L"? I also have a friend with a 1997 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport who is having the identical problem.
For both of us, the AC switch lights up in the cabin when pressed, but the AC clutch never engages. And we do not hear any clicking sounds or see any change in the engine's RPMs.
We have checked fuses, and all of them related to the AC system look good.
On my friend's car, everything was working fine last year; nothing has changed on his car since then, but now the AC is inoperative. My car was a used car purchase, and it never worked from Day 1. I do have a full service history for the car and did *not* see any evidence of AC problems.
Could it be that the refrigerant on both our cars just needs to be refilled? This seems like a simple fix, but we wonder whether this will just mask an underlying problem with a leak.
