FML. Just recently my MT transmission on my 2004 RS started making a popcorn noise after a minute or two of driving. It's not consistent either, as sometimes it's fine, and other times is really loud for no apparent reason. It happens only when moving, in gear or in neutral.
For a while now I would have clicking/pops when making very hard right turns, and just assumed it was a bad CV joint. When this noise started happening I just assumed the CV joint got much worse, as it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side (although I've never heard an axle make this kind of noise).
I swapped in a reman axle today, took it for a spin, and got the same noise
One thing I did notice is that tranny was leaking a bit, but looked like it was coming from the drain plug. I drained the oil and there seemed to be plenty in there, but I filled it up with fresh stuff.
FYI, I'm at almost 210,000 on the transmission/body.
Well without further ado, :corn:
