Alright so Im making this thread to try and get some solid data/ more information regarding airbag systems and compatibility and interchangeability mostly relating to swapping GD dashboards into GCs.
If all you're going to say is remove the airbags then please refrain from replying to this thread, because thats not the answer I'm looking for.
So! GD dashboards into GC models. Below is some information that I have learned from researching, if you know more about this, please let me know. Also I have a few questions below! Please correct me if I have any wrong information. (Cars Im thinking of is 2000 RS and an 2006 STi). Im not responsible if you try something and injure yourself or others. This is peerly a question/ info thread.
Info:
- RS steering wheel airbag is a single charge.
- Only a 2004 STi steering wheel/ airbag will properly work in a GC because its the only STi airbag with a single charge, like the GC. In order to make the airbag work you have to swap the airbag charge out of a 02/03 WRX into the 04 wheel/ airbag, and then it will plug and play into the GC airbag module. (Similar to swapping and WRX Momo wheel/ bag into an RS).
-2005+ steering wheel/ airbags are a dual charge. Iv been told you can swap out the charges like stated above, but again I wouldn't trust that. As Im sure the way the dual charge airbags and single charges airbags inflate differently. Not positive about that thought.
- Swapping an STi dashboard into an RS, if you do want I stated above you could have a working airbag for the driver. But that leaves the passenger without an airbag.
- I know swapping airbag systems (modules and sensors) is not a good idea, plus the STis have side impact airbags, the RSs don't. Running resistors to these could work, but I dont trust that at all.
Questions:
- Has anyone ever tried putting a RS passenger airbag into an STi dashboard and switching out the dashboard airbag cover? I would imagine it would fit but require some modification/ different mounting.
- Could you put a 02/03 passenger airbag into an 06 STi dashboard and have it plug and play into the RS airbag module? (Similar to the WRX drivers airbag into the RS system). The dashboards look similar? (This seems very plausible to me, providing the connectors work.)
