In a stuck spot... Suggestions

So just recently picked up my 98 RS (started a build thread)

But the car had a bad headgasket (no ticking noticeable at colder temp, but at operating temp starts ticking, no knocking). There is no noticeable leaking external anywhere either.

1. How long could I push the car until something a little more harsh happened? My drive to work is 3 miles and don't really travel too much.

2. Didn't know the actual expense of head gaskets job. unfortunately I cannot or do not have the means where I live at the moment to pull the engine and do the work myself. So it must be outsourced. A company who specializes in only Subaru work (Flat Four) quoted $1170



This is where my dilemma is. Unless someone knowledgeable, local would do it for cheaper cash and beer.

EJ205 $1800 + $750 to install (not including exhaust)
Head gaskets obviously $1170 + tax
EJ251 $? + $650 to install


Not really sure which route to go. I planned to build the EJ25D come income tax (Expecting $6,000+) but that's 2-3 months away. Build for boost the proper way.

If you were in my spot what would you do. Considering I still have bills, rent, and 2 little ones.

I mean I spend money wisely for sure. Just wasn't sure figuring I have 1 last pay (26th) but hopefully I can get insight on which route to go.

As for the build I was looking to make 300-350awhp to help with a choice.
