Hi, everyone. I just found this site after being in a terrifying car accident (is there any other kind?) while driving my 2001 2.5 RS. I am fine, the car is not. I was able to drive it home after the accident, but it was kind of not good, with the bumper scraping against the tire and all. The insurance adjuster initially said that it was almost certainly totaled due to its age and she arranged to have a tow truck take it to the salvage yard. I paced around for a while and then called back to say I wanted to know how much it would cost to repair, because I might be interested in fixing it regardless of whether it was considered totaled. She warned me about there being a lot of complicated state regulation stuff in Pennsylvania if I did that, but I really wanted to keep my car because, you know, my car!, so they cancelled the tow truck and scheduled an appointment for an insurance appraiser to come out and look at it instead.
Meanwhile, I went back to the Subaru dealer where I originally bought my car so many, many years ago, and is also where I have taken it for all its maintenance and repairs over the years. (I have never once noticed another 2.5 RS over there, ever.) Anyway, I cried on their shoulders a bit (figuratively speaking), and they gave me the same warnings about fixing a totaled car. Then they took me out and showed me the hulking monsters that are the Imprezas now, which I'm afraid did nothing to make me feel better. Impreza, I do not know who you are anymore! I have the coupe with an automatic transmission. Where am I going to find another affordable coupe with AWD and an automatic transmission? Nowhere, that's where.
So the next day the insurance appraiser came out to look over the car. I nearly passed out when she said it was worth $5k, needed $1800 of repairs, and was therefore not totaled. She speculated that the car held its value because of the AWD, which is popular in Pennsylvania. Still, nobody I talked to expected the car to be worth that much. (quick addition, the car has ~134k miles on it, all are mine) I am so glad I called back and had that tow truck canceled. Do you think I would have gotten my car back after it was taken to the salvage yard? *shudder*
Anyway, my car is now over at the autobody shop. I still haven't heard what they think about it, so I'm not out of the woods yet, but I am praying, praying, praying.
I don't appear to have permission to attach photos, but if you wish to brave the insanity that is photobucket, here is an extremely unflattering photo of my car being towed away. If you look closely at the front passenger side you can see how the fender is all smashed in. The front bumper is not looking too great either.

Anyway, hello!
